I Just Don't Get It............

The U.S. Census Bureau is spending $85 million on two mailers. One to let you know the census is coming and another to let you know the census form was sent.  WHAT?!?!??!?!?!?!?  $85 MILLION dollars wasted, on what everyone will just throw in the trash can.  Who makes these decisions?  It appears that Robert Groves, the director of the U.S. Census Bureau signed the letter.

According to the bureau, the letter will increase participation in the census by 6 to 12%.  Sorry....those percentages are not high enough to warrant WASTING that much money!

I got my letter yesterday and thought exactly the same thing. Incidentally, it came on the same day as a work email letting us all know the parent hospital is changing the name of all our hospitals. New signs, new letterhead...waste! In the meantime, salaries are frozen, benefits are decreased and hiring opportunities are limited.

Wish I was in the sign business.

I agree.

We got our letter yesterday also, but, next week we are suppose to get the form, fill it out, and send it back, immediately!

If we ran our households like the government runs the country, we would be trillions of dollars in debt also, except we would be living on the streets, or in the woods... or setting it out behind bars.. LOL..

Hey, I live in the woods, and love it! LOL.

Got my form 3 days ago. Guy delivered it in person. I haven't filled it out yet. I'd better do it soon, right?

Hugs,

Renie

$85 million? You can't be serious...! And just think of how many millions more it will cost to process the census once you receive it. It's a shame people throw them in the garbage, because the government uses them as an indication of how much money should be spent on various programs. So, the more they receive back, the more money you folks get for various things.

... like mailing out a census form. :-)

I had just said that to Mike yesterday when our mailer came in the mail telling us the census would be here. It's an outrage really, with the economy the way it is. And then I have read lots of stories about questions they are asking that shouldn't be on there. Not sure until I see it though.

Rudee,
Yes the thing that is crazy is the waste... at a time when we sure don't need it. I love data and statistics, but these 2 mailings are not at all necessary.

Patty,
I think most of us are scratching our heads over this.

Ann,
Yep! You got that right.

Renie,
Hand delivered? Wow. That is how it was all done many years ago. And people also had to go to a facility nearby to register. We could really do all this over the internet now and save lots of $$$.

JO,
I am not sure if I understand what you mean about sending these mailings back. They are just notices that we get to tell us to fill out the form that comes next week. And then we get another form after the census form reminding us again. Both are expensive and not necessary as far as I can tell. This cost has nothing to do with the actual form to fill out and send in. But now you have me wondering. I think I will research what you just said and see if I can find anything out. Nothing like that was said on the form, nor was it reported on our news. I will get back with you though, if I find anything out about it.

Sandy,
I just went to the web page for the Census Bureau. I wonder if the questions they are asking, really have to be answered. I would imagine we are free to answer the basic ones and leave the rest. I am going to check into it a little later.

Thanks everyone for your visits!

Makes you wonder if there really is a 'credit crunch' does it not?

Still, I guess it keeps a load of civil servants in jobs.

Laughable, were it not so serious.

Brenda, silly me, I meant the census form. :-) People should always fill those out and send them back. Well, that's what we do in Canada.

I was thinking the same as well. And for those who ignore the letter and then later ignore the form. We will have people calling on the ones that didn't reply. I also got a reminder from my state representative in my district (mostly hispanic) that by law if somebody asks if you are legally in this country you don't have to anwer. So if they are ilegal they should be counted so they are properly represented in our government. ???
I am now following your blog-- thanks for visiting mine.

This waste of paper and money is also common practice in my country.
